Children Around the World: A Global Perspective on Education and Inclusion
Posted in 2025 ISW Activities
Objective: This activity is designed to help students gain insights into how children from various parts of the world experience school, emphasizing inclusion and access to education for all.
Activity Description:
- Research: Assign each student or group a different country to explore. They should focus on how education is structured there, paying special attention to how students with disabilities are included.
- Presentation: Students will create posters, digital slides, or short videos to showcase what they have learned about their assigned country’s educational system.
- Discussion: Encourage students to discuss how the educational experiences of their international peers compare and contrast with their own. This can be an eye-opener and a way for them to appreciate the diversity of educational experiences.
- Global Connection: If possible, organize a virtual meeting with a classroom from one of the countries studied to facilitate a real-time exchange of school experiences. This can help students connect personally with the realities of peers around the globe.
Instructions for Teachers:
- Preparation: Before the activity, provide students with resources to start their research on different countries. This could include access to library materials, reputable websites, and contact with educational institutions abroad for firsthand information.
- Guidance: Assist students in understanding how to look for information specifically related to education and inclusion. Guide them in questioning how inclusive practices are implemented elsewhere.
- Technical Setup: If planning a virtual exchange, test all equipment and software in advance to ensure connectivity and functionality.
- Facilitation: During presentations and discussions, help guide the conversation towards understanding and empathy. Encourage students to think critically about what inclusive education means globally.
- Follow-up: After the activity, consider having students reflect on their learning through a writing assignment or a class discussion. This will help consolidate their understanding and appreciation of global educational diversity.
Connection to Inclusion:
This activity not only broadens students’ geographical and cultural horizons but also deepens their understanding of the universal challenges and triumphs in achieving inclusive education. It highlights the importance of global solidarity in ensuring that every child, regardless of their circumstances, can access and benefit from a supportive educational environment.
