Building a Better School: Action Through Art

Objective: Inspire students to envision and express their ideas for a school that prioritizes the needs and well-being of every child, emphasizing a welcoming, supportive, and accessible environment for all learners.

Activity Description:

  • Artistic Expression: Students will create artistic representations of an ideal school that truly puts children first. They can choose from several mediums:
    • Murals or Posters: In small groups, students design visual pieces that symbolize inclusion, accessibility, and belonging.
    • Collage or Mixed Media Projects: Using images, drawings, and words, students craft collages that depict a school where every child feels valued and included.
    • 3D Models: Students engage in a hands-on experience by building models of classrooms or playgrounds designed to eliminate barriers and enhance belonging.
  • Display: Arrange to showcase the students’ artwork prominently within the school or feature it in a digital gallery accessible to the school community and beyond.

Instructions for Teachers:

  1. Materials Preparation: Gather all necessary art supplies and materials for murals, collages, and model construction. Ensure there are enough resources for all students to participate fully.
  2. Idea Generation: Help students brainstorm ideas about what inclusion, accessibility, and belonging look like in a school setting. Discuss elements that make a school environment welcoming for everyone.
  3. Collaborative Art-Making: Encourage teamwork as students work in groups or individually on their projects. Facilitate discussions within groups to ensure that every student’s voice is heard and incorporated.
  4. Art Display: Plan for a special event or designated time during or after Inclusive Schools Week to unveil and display the artwork. Invite parents, other students, and school staff to view the art and learn from the students’ perspectives.
  5. Reflective Discussion: After displaying the art, hold a class discussion or ask students to write about how creating the art made them feel and what they learned about inclusivity and accessibility through this process.

Connection to Inclusion:

This activity empowers students to use their creativity to critically think about and influence their school environment. By imagining and depicting a school that supports every student, they contribute ideas that could inspire real-world changes in their school community. This promotes a sense of agency and responsibility among students to advocate for and implement inclusive practices.
