Seeing Through Another’s Eyes

Objective: This activity helps students build empathy and a deeper understanding of the diverse experiences of their peers. By thinking about different perspectives and reflecting on everyday challenges, students learn how small actions can make their school more inclusive for everyone.

Activity Description:

Perspective Activities

Invite students to complete brief, thought-provoking exercises that help them consider what learning or participating might feel like for someone with a different experience or ability. Examples include:

  • Completing a task while following a set of unique instructions or limitations (e.g., using only non-dominant hand).
  • Listening to a short story and summarizing it without taking notes, to reflect on memory and focus.
  • Completing a short written reflection after being briefly distracted, to notice how focus and environment affect learning.

Discussion

Afterward, guide a class conversation about what students noticed.

  • What felt different or challenging?
  • How can we make learning spaces supportive for everyone?
  • What can empathy look like in action at school?

Reflection

Ask students to write or draw one thing they can do to make their classroom more inclusive and welcoming for others.

Instructions for Teachers:

  1. Preparation: Choose 2–3 short perspective activities appropriate for your students’ age and needs.
  2. Guidance: Emphasize that the goal is to understand others’ experiences—not to imitate or make assumptions about disabilities.
  3. Facilitation: Keep discussions positive, focusing on understanding, kindness, and solutions that build belonging.
  4. Follow-Up: Invite students to post or share their reflections on a class “Empathy Wall” or bulletin board titled “How We See Through Another’s Eyes.”

Connection to Inclusion:

By exploring different perspectives in safe and thoughtful ways, students begin to recognize the strengths and challenges that make each person unique. The activity encourages empathy, respect, and collaboration—key building blocks for inclusive learning communities.
