Monroe Demonstration Academy holds an after school program called Able Athletes where students who are labeled as having Autism and Multiple Disabilities participate in a 10-week after school program where they get to learn and practice gross motor skills such as jumping, striking, balancing etc. The program is culminated with a school-wide assembly in which our Able Athletes get to show off all of the skills that they have learned in front of their families, parents, classmates, and peers. This year, our 7th and 8th grade girls basketball team got to participate with our athletes in which they helped at practice, with setup, with encouragement, and were teammates with our athletes throughout the program. We also held our first ever Able Athletes Banquet, in which our athletes, their families, and community members hosted a white table cloth dinner for our athletes, and they were recognized with a trophy celebration. Included below are images of our program from this past year.
