Instruction in Inclusive Settings

How does the principal create an inclusive school that values all students as full members of the school community? Some of the most important characteristics of inclusive schools focus on providing support in general education classrooms.

  • All students are educated in the general education classroom to the greatest extent appropriate
  • Expectations are high
  • Individualized supports are available when needed
  • Decisions are made on the basis of student needs and not labels or places

The following guiding principles reflect current effective practices in inclusive schools.

  1. Instructional settings must be individually determined on a student-by-student basis.
  2. Personal supports, such as staff and other resources, should follow the student into the general education classroom.
  3. When appropriately implemented, inclusive practices benefit the general education student through in-class support, a focus on differentiated instruction, and improved resource sharing and collaboration.
